A visit to the Crinan Canal
Some photos of our trip to the Crinan Canal
A
coffee stop on the way up. Looking across Loch Lomond to Ben Lomond |
![]() The slipway at Ardrishaig. The sea lock is round the other side of the harbour where the wood is stored |
![]() Sitting on the pontoon outside the sea lock
|
We
are now in the lock and waiting for Bogangles to join us |
![]() Across from our first nights moorings. These rhododendrons are typical of this area. |
![]() Approaching lock 5 at Cairnbaan
|
![]() and lock 7 still in the Cairnbaan flight. No water shortage here! |
![]() The reservoir on the summit pound. This is very typical scenery for this part of Scotland
|
![]() The first pound down from the summit
|
![]() Our lunch time mooring with Mirk on guard. The reservoir is to the left |
![]() Different scenery. On our decent towards Crinan |
Wouldn't
like to get the stern under that lot! All locks have gate paddles which can
be a bit fierce. |
The
moorings at Bellanoch |
A
beautiful setting for a church |
There
are a few of these little islands on this wider bit of canal |
Approaching
Crinan. The lock ahead of us lets you down into the basin and the famous
Crinan Hotel is over on the right |
![]() Boats of all nationalities use the Crinan. |
![]() Moored in Crinan Basin. She looks small compared with the other craft there! |
Looking
across the last two locks and out to sea |
![]() We are moored where the fishing boats tie up when they are in port. |
![]() Some of the puffers in the basin. The Vital Spark was used for filming the Para Handy TV series |
![]() Leaving the sea lock with Mirk watching from the stern |
And
heading out to sea. |
![]() Hey, I think that's far enough! There's a bit of a swell on our here. |
![]() On our way back. Gamebird coped very well with the swell which was actually a bit worse further out. |
![]() A better shot of Bogangles, the boat we shared the sea lock at Ardrishaig with. |
![]() This was last year when we were leaving the Festival of the Sea in Edinburgh with a tall ship in the background. Thanks to Derek Rhind who recently sent me this photo. We are towing Ralph's rowing boat.
