What's new?     Book Bluebell    What's On

Why Bridge 19-40?  - because our patch is the bit of the Union Canal in Lowland Scotland between Bridge 19, which is just east of the M8,  and bridge 40 which is just west of Philpstoun.

Who are we?  We are one of the smallest and friendliest canal societies on the Lowland Canals.  All our members are volunteers and what we lack in numbers we more than make up for in enthusiasm. We are based at Bells Mill Wharf in Winchburgh which we lease from British Waterways. We have a hut there for all our bits and pieces and we have a picnic bench so that passing boats can stop for a while. BW have recently installed a water tap and power bollard at our wharf . All mod cons, you could say. We even have armchairs in our hut for those relaxing moments when the chairman can't think of anything else which needs doing!

What do we do? One of our main aims is to encourage the people living in the communities alongside our patch of canal to take an interest in the canal and help maintain it as a pleasant amenity to enjoy boating on, walking or cycling beside or fishing in. In fact, anything but throwing rubbish in!

How do we do it? We have a little work boat, Roseann, which we use to do litter picks along the edges of the canal. We also use Roseann to do boat trips and this not only lets people see their canal at first hand but it helps us raise some badly need funds.  She is a  little red and black boat with a white canopy. She is looking good just now as our members have been giving her a make over so that she would look her best for the Scottish Boat Show (August 2003) where we gave members of the public free boat trips on all three days. We also have an old boat, Bluebell, which we are in the process of restoring. In 2007 she was brought into use  and she can be hired by groups. The cost is £60 for 2 hours, and £20 an hour for every subsequent hour. m She can carry 12 passengers. For more information, contact Ann on ann.street@btinternet.com or phone 01506 417685

When do we meet? We meet on the first Wednesday  of every month and all our members are made welcome at every meeting. In the summer we hold our meetings at Bells Mill Wharf at 7pm and the business meeting is followed by a work party when we do some tidying up of the wharf and have a coffee. From October we  meet in the Initiative hut in Winchburgh at 7.30. If there are special jobs needing done we arrange to meet at other times.

How can you help us? If you wish to join the Bridge 19–40 Canal Society please print off the membership form and send it with your cheque to our membership secretary, Anne Leslie.
